Why the food they said they were “bad” are now “good”?
Fats that have always been the enemy of the diets or health are no longer and many other foods said they were “bad” are now “good”.No one seems to agree on nutrition, why are these changes of direction and who decides what food they are “bad” or what “good” at all times?
Then we try to analyze this topic a bit to respond to the various questions that arise when we speak of “good” or “bad” foods for the body.
Foods that have changed reputation
As it has happened with fats, before demonized and today more accepted or even recommended in a healthy diet, there are many foods that have changed reputation over the years, ceasing to be “good” to be “bad” or conversely, if enemies to be allied health of the organism.
Examples of foods before “bad” and now “good are:
- Pork : for many years the pork meat with a high fat content and poor quality fats was associated, however, a lean cut of pork may have more protein and less fat than chicken or turkey . In addition, given the change in feeding pigs in recent years, today their meat is richer in fat good fats that poor nutritional quality.
- Egg : has always been infamous for bear the responsibility to increase cholesterol in our body, however, there are few studies that disassociate their intake with cholesterol levels and this food so versatile and tasty can be an excellent source of quality protein, carotene, iron and vitamin A. therefore, the egg is a clear example that what was once “bad”, today it is no longer, as well, the cholesterol we eat little impact on their levels blood .
- Coffee : is another food that has changed its bad reputation for a recent reputation, because although it was believed that increased levels of blood pressure, harming the body weight and other negative effects actually consumed in adequate quantities coffee can offer many positive effects to thebody and away from harm, can benefit cardiovascular health .
- Chocolate : the chocolate has always been to blame for the extra kilos or outbreaks of acne on our body, however, moderate intake has been linked to lower body weight and also knows that chocolate is not the cause of acne but that is a false myth .
Food before but now not so good:
- Milk : it has been for years the recommended food when it sought to obtain calcium and above all considered essential in stages of growth, however, milk is not the only source of mineral but on the contrary, there are foods that provide more calcium the same. Therefore, milk is no longer recommended nor considered essential in our daily diet.
- Bluefish : your good fats have returned to blue fish in a food highly recommended when caring for the body, however, recently have not been observed benefits of omega – 3 on depression and is known to many varieties of oily fish such as tuna may contain high amounts of mercury, a toxic component to the human body if consumed in large quantities.
- Margarine : it emerged as a vegetable substitute to classic butter rich in cholesterol and saturated fat, but often this industrial trans fats alternative has worse effect on the human organism and is not an option with fewer calories or fat content. Therefore, margarine is no longer the “good” food and recommended it once was.
It is clear that there are many foods that have changed their reputation with the passage of time and do nothing but confuse consumers or make it more distrustful of current nutritional advice.
Why this change of direction is that?
The change in the reputation of different foods may be due largely to the science , because there is some real controversy in the results that yield different studies.
We could also find studies influenced by the scientific link between a company and an industry or research funded by big brands recognized and trade which of course, arrive to questionable conclusions.
On the other hand, we received advice from different health professionals , with interest, knowledge and which different values can lead to very radical changes about the “good” or “bad” food for the body. For example: an outdated or vegan to end professional, you can influence the reputation of a food.
Similarly, extremism or fanaticism that abound today can cause great confusion that exists or changes of direction on food.
While there may be a real scientific debate about the properties of a food, the key is not to fall into extremes , since much lies in seeing the quantity or everything in life we lead. For example, if we are sedentary, smoke and eat every day in a fast food , clearly the chocolate will not benefit either, while it could be anything harmful eat us 5 eggs a day if we are physically active, daily eat plenty of fruits and vegetables , we do not smoke and are trying to reduce meat in the diet.
That is, it may be time to see food in context, in a whole food frame and not classify them as “good” or “bad” but as recommended or not under certain conditions and under certain characteristics that vary according to each person.
